Over the past few years, Endo International, a pharmaceutical company that delivers medicines and products to patients in need, has gained notoriety for its transvaginal mesh products. Many women who suffered from mesh complications brought lawsuits against Endo International, and at the beginning of August, Endo announced its intent to resolve the final batch of lawsuits with $775 million.
Vaginal Mesh Problems
The vaginal mesh products manufactured by Endo International were meant to help women with pelvic floor disorder. Stress urinary incontinence is the most common type of pelvic floor disorder that leads to the unintentional loss of urine, especially during physical movement or sudden activity like coughing and sneezing. Surgical mesh is implanted to support the urethra or bladder neck in order to help women overcome the effects of SUI. However, far too many women experienced erosion, infection, pain, and additional urinary problems when their Endo International mesh implants failed.
Endo International has already settled a number of vaginal mesh implant lawsuits, but about 22,000 still remain. At the beginning of August, the company announced that it had set aside $775 million to resolve that final batch of lawsuits. That brings the total settlement cost to $2.6 billion due to Endo’s flawed medical devices.
Endo’s president and CEO Paul Campanelli stated, “We believe it is a very important milestone for Endo to have reached agreements to resolve virtually all known U.S mesh product liability claims. While it remains possible that additional claims will be filed, we believe today’s announcement will assist most mesh claimants to move forward with their lives and will permit Endo to move forward with an even greater focus on executing against our core strategic priorities.”
